Waste collections for new developments
We encourage developers to contact our planning team for specific waste and recycling design guidance. Correct design will benefit the occupier and can help eliminate potential cost implications for incorrect design.
Read our waste and planning guidance [PDF, 3MB] for new developments.
Order new bins
If you need to order bins for a new development please complete our order form [DOCX, 77Kb] and send it to refuse@scambs.gov.uk.
To complete this form you will need:
- evidence of a Royal Mail Postal Address for each property
- evidence of an accessible and safe route to each property
- the bin store code if the bin is for flats
Bins will be delivered to each property no more than 2 weeks before the occupier is due to move in.
It is the developers responsibility to ensure:
- the bins are taken to an agreed collection point on their allocated collection day and returned to the property once collected
- if waste bags are used they conform to the current Greater Cambridgeshire Shared Waste Services policy for each waste stream - for example, clear sacks for recycling and black for residual waste
- residents are aware of the bin collection arrangements in place to collect their waste whilst building works are ongoing
- the disposal of refuse does not cause a nuisance, including littering
- bins remain the property of Greater Cambridge Shared Waste Services and once allocated to an address, must not be transferred to other properties without prior agreement.
If we attempt to deliver bins but cannot, due to the above issues, there may be a charge to return later.
Managing agents and landlords
If you are a landlord for single property, or manage a shared building such as flats, please download our guides below:
- information pack for properties with wheelie bins [PDF, 0.8MB]
- information pack for managing communal bins at flats [PDF, 1MB]
It is your responsibility to:
- tell tenants about waste management. Please see Recycling posters and leaflets for more information
- make sure there are enough bins and they are accessible for bin collection crews. Bin store doors must either be unlocked or have a council approved code – please contact refuse@scambs.gov.uk for the approved list of acceptable codes
- remove excess waste/flytipping. Please see our bulky waste page for more information, or find your nearest household recycling centre (tip)
- wash down and clean the bin stores and bins
- order additional bins, request recycling stickers/posters/signs, or report other issues by emailing refuse@scambs.gov.uk
